All about the farm, the farmher, the family and the food
About the Farm
Cattail Organics is an off shoot of Stoney Acres Farm where Kat Becker managed a 150 acre diversified organic farm (and is still farming on the land) with Tony Schultz since 2005. Cattail Organics is Certified Organic and focused on high quality produce and plants. This year at Cattail Organics, Kat is handling all the wholesale accounts from Stoney Acres Farm, as well as expanding organic nursery plant sales, and offering new goods like clam shell greens. In 2018 Cattail Organics will offer a small three season CSA, free high quality local produce to local food pantries, and more specialty greens.
About the Farm-her
Kat hails from the small metropolis of New York City (yes the city not the suburbs) with a diverse background in International Agriculture, a Masters Degree in Sociology, and a passion around seed politics, plant varieties and plant breeding. She has farmed for the past 13 years (11 in Athens WI) and brings a deep knowledge of plants and a passion for justice in all parts of the farm including valuing her own and others labor and caring for soil microorganisms. Kat loves all aspects of the farm - from nerdy spreadsheets, to variety trials, hard physical labor, social media, and eating. Together with her sister she is blogging about all things organic farming, family and food at Cattales the blog.
About the Family
Kat has three young children, a six and nine year old boys and three year old girl, who sample and trample vegetables and bring unimaginable amounts of love to her and her farm. She also shares space and meals with her mother who was transplanted from NYC in 2012 and shares farm resources, machinery and land with her favorite co-parent Tony Schultz of Stoney Acres.
About the Food
Farming is really about food and food is actually about farming. Cattail Organics is focused on making these connections transparent and teaching eaters how to eat seasonally, organically, diversely and beautifully. You can see a full list of where to find Cattail Organics food here. In 2017 much of Kat's efforts will focus on creating beautiful food for restaurants, schools and small grocery stores and in localizing some products (like clamshell greens) that most people get from California. Beyond this Cattail Organics will be growing food for food pantries focusing on their needs (not just sourcing excess) and will be building the backbone for her future small multi season CSA.
